I think the opening text said that replicants are obedient: so obedient that they can be. Well, that was the point of the prostitute character who acts as a surrogate for JOI. However, the ego can't always suit all three urges, thus evoking feelings of anxiety. Ian would send the replicant down to the lab and have them start to work on it.
